Steelie at the front of the bucket has started the boom boom cluck, PP is in the back of the bucket.. Hatching should start any time now.
She has gorgeous coloring! What makes so many of em have the darker crest though? Is that a genetic thing?
I'm trying to steer away from that and curious.

Yes, I think Hinotori explained it was genetic. She and her full siblings are silkie mix and 3 of them have gotten the black head feathers, several others have not. I seriously doubt it came from mom, so dad is passing it along..
BTW, it's day 23 and those two are Stillllllllll sitting on those eggs. No bad smells coming from the nest but all I still see are the eggs. There are 5 in the incubator going into lockdown tonight, so if theirs still haven't hatched I'll be swapping eggs for chicks as they dry out and fluff up.

Yes the dark head is genetic. Pain to get rid of but possible as long as you have birds without it.

I don't actually know how many control it. It was very rarely popping up in my red headed flock so it can hide, but in my experience if a black headed one has chicks they will pass it on to at least some depending on their own background.

Oh exciting!!!
Can't wait to see pics of the new babies! What are these in incubator?
You don't think the ones under the two are gonna hatch at all?

14 weeks old
Boy or girl
There are 4 total buff silkies...3 are huge and 2 of those are definitely boys.
Then there is one very tiny lil girl.
But this one is as big as all the boys but I'm thinking looks girlee.

What does side view of head look like and do wattle spots have any mulberry color?

Front view looks very girly. I've had big girls before.

Well they are on day 23.. I marked the day on the calendar that PP refused to come out of the nesting bucket.. It was a few days later that Steelie joined her.
The ones in the incubator are from the pen where Top Gun and two daughters of PP are.. Sioux a cochin mix was also in there but now is in the black and gold silkie roo I got. She puts the head dress and a half on her babies!

I'm collecting eggs for the next hatch, since I'm pretty sure these babies will go out to the moms. (Can't let them be heartbroken after all that work). I'm collecting from pure silkies, Sioux who was in with Top Gun until a week ago, and the golden girls (one is an F1) and a son of PP. Also have a few eggs from my $20 rooster.

This is a video of the 4 buff babies...the.one I'm questioning if girl or not is the one that looks right into the phone up close. I think you can see side view here too.
