Thems cool lookin little birds I may need to get me some..
They are real characters, my black silkie hen decides my Roo was all hers when I brought him home. She likes to attack me if I do anything with him.

My other 3 silkies pretty much rule the roost, they might be small, but they are bossy!

Have you ever thought of doing a gender dna test for your silkies?

I did with three chicks I had here, wanted a Roo and didn’t want to wait forever to find out. At 5 weeks I was able to find out they were all pullets 😆 so much for wanting a Roo!
Not even gonna bother with that.. They are what they are.. When they are old enough they lay or crow and that settles that. I'm old and retired, I got time.:lau

Ya know, Charlie.. there's no convincing people to want silkies. You either do or don't. Initially I didn't, until Amanda gave me General Lee.. then Shadow Captain and Poof Poof. Just can't match their personalities, except for Mara my BCM hen. Silkies take to cuddles more than any other breed I've had. All my boys are polite as all get out except when I mess with their kids.
Gen Lee..Butt's up, Doc? His comb and wattles are way too big and not the right type, but he produces lovely gals.

I saw a debate raging on a FB group I’m in but didn’t want to engage because, well, it’s FB lol.

The debate was over how to breed for red Pyle in silkies. The photos that a lot of people were showing looked like one of my girls…but I’ve always thought she was some diluted buff mix and that red Pyle was darker and more concentrated to the wing area. In fact one person said they exclusively breed and sell red pyle but all their females looked like my girl (minus the bad haircut lol).

So I’ll ask you lovely silkie experts. Red Pyle or a random buff-mix of some sort.

Looks Buff to me. But isn't red and buff basically the same color, just one is diluted?

I was under the impression that red (or red Pyle) isn’t a recognized colour in silkies yet. But I always thought the red Pyle project colour was like this (thank you google):

But the FB breeders had females that mostly looked like this:

So now I’m confused.

I'm not up on red pyle genetics. It's a rather rare color, maily because people hadnt been breeding for it much even in breeds where it was more common.

That said, looking at red pyle in OEGB, the pale hens are correct.

Your hen doesn't look like it fits. Looks more like a dilute buff, but Ive had partridge hens come out like that when crossing lines as well. Those have always produced nice partridge chicks of their own.

That’s a relief because she’s one of a kind for me so right now she is in with my partridges. Glad that means she gets to stay with them!
