SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

I can not tell a rooster from a hen at a early stage, but I suspect that my Columbian Rock Cockerel can. He seems to do the breast to breast challenge to one of the Silkie chicks.

I ordered 15 chicks from cackle hatchery and at first I didn't want silkies but I couldn't get any sebrights so I got 5 white silkies instead and I love them!! I think that one of them might be a buff silkie, she's more golden yellow than the rest..

One of my little silkies was TERRIFIED of me, freaking out whenever I put my hand in the brooder for any reason....the rest of the chicks (silkies included) come up to me for treats and lovins....but I did win the crazy silkie over by giving him yogurt on my finger (the totally plain organic kind) it's still wary of me but comes up to my hand and doesn't freak out anymore.

The one in the middle facing the camera is Rosalie, the possible buff...this was taken a few days ago and even now she is much darker than the rest

They are too cute, at first I thought they were a little freaky but now I love them!! And it's only been a few days!

They really do grow on you

Ohhh, they are soooo cute! They may all be whites. The 2 white silkies I have started out more yellow, they're white as snow now. If I had more room, I'd get more. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for a roo

, so I can have silkie babies.

In the pic she is kinda washed out....and she's only been getting more and more golden while the rest are lightening up...I know she doesn't really contrast in the picture, but in real life it's a big difference

It is different with pet/hatchery quality silkies. I knew what my hatchery silkies were at 4 weeks old ( i dont have them anymore ), but I couldnt tell what my silkies from a breeder were until 6 months.

This has been my experience as well. My 3 chicks from Meyer hatchery were clearly roosters at 10 weeks. My handsome Mr. Angel kept his gender a secret until 5 months or so.

So far I only have 1 silkie... She is PQ due to her comb, but she is so fluffy & cute!! I have her in with my other chicks who are a little older than she is, and everybody is perfectly happy... She has grown fond of my white leghorn cockerel! I've had frizzle bantams in with my standard size birds and never any trouble - just the typical figuring out where everyone stands in the pecking order. If you do decide silkies aren't for you, I'm sure you won't have a hard time finding them a good home, but I'd give it a chance...

One of my partridge silkies started out really yellow, but now its the same color as the other. Colors can really vary.

Thanks so much! That helps a lot:D
