SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

My silkies get a long with my other girls. I have 2 silkies, 4 buff cochin, 2 ameraucana, and a mille fleur d'uccle together in the brooder. They all hang out, eat, and sleep together. Silkies are wonderful birds. Mine are very calm. Really, I'd give them a chance.

Yeah so far this is what I'm seeing, my silkies are no where near as social or friendly compared to my buff orpington...and they seem to be growing sooo slow, I'm not sure when I'll be able to introduce them to the chicks that are 2.5 weeks older but miles bigger...

...I'm giving them a chance, but they just aren't jumping into my heart as I thought they would...If I had a friend locally who wanted them and was a silkie lover I'd gladly rehome them and get some farm birds from the feedstore...like a RIR and a Wyn....but since my limit is 4 and two of those spots are the silkies, I am going to try and make the best of it. (Their legs sort of gross me out too with all those freaky toes)

We have been talking to a silkie breeder here. My granddaughter wants silkies( shes 8). She already has sizzles (silkie x ee mix) According to the breeder silkies like to stay with who they are raised with. in other words you might want to introduce them early so they get accustomed to each other. I know her sizzles tend to stay to themselves. They don't socialize with the other banties at all.

If you lived in CO I'd gladly take them off your hands! The first few weeks we had ours I picked them up constantly. I still pick them up and cuddle pretty often now, but they don't fit into my hand as nicely anymore. They're bantams, so they'll never get too big which is why it looks like they're growing slowly. At 7 weeks they're the same size as my 5 w/o standard buff cochin. I did have them in with my other 7weekers in the beginning, but I like to move chicks into different brooder to socialize them. My silkies have always been really social with the other birds.

ive been reading this post intently,i brought home 2 bantam silkies, for my kids. id like to throw in a question in noone minds........are the bantams good layers and broodies? how many eggs could these little girls hatch? i already am thinking i will have to maybe build them a seperate coop, they will be sooo tiny and im afraid my bigger girls will beat them up!!

Silkies are awesome broodies. I can't wait 'til my girls start laying so I can hatch eggs under them!! I've seen them in with bigger birds and do just fine. I didn't combine my banties with the big girls because my hens have had some pecking issues, so I did build them a seperate coop. I can't vouch for my silkies, but my little serama hen lays an egg every other day. They're really small eggs, but the kids LOVE to eat them.

I considered rehoming my Silkies when they were a few months old. I just couldn't get attached to them for some reason, but I hung onto them, and now I'm so hooked!

As far as laying, I have some that lay about 5 eggs a week. Sometimes it varies and I only get 3 or 4 though. They make the best Moms!

I am like you, still trying to get attached to my silkies. I wanted them so much, and I do think they are cute, but I'm still waiting for the attachment to happen. I'm sure it will but I understand how you are feeling. They really are sweet, docile little things and pretty funny too. Mine are in a brooder in front of a mirror and it is like girls lined up in a bathroom preening, lol. I'm a little concerned at how they will mix in with the rest of my flock of standards and banties, but I'll deal with that when I have to. I can always make adjustments to the coop and run. I have to admit the broody thing scares me since I don't hatch eggs, but again, I'll deal with that.

My silkie just started to warm up to me and I have had her since Easter!! I always talk to the chicks in the brooder and handle them everyday. What I think won Rocky over was me dipping my finger in water then into chick food. All the chicks run over and peck off the food. Finally Rocky decided I was not too bad after all and will now perch on my hand and hang out. She also will follow me around if she is loose! The others don't follow me as well as she does!
