SILKIES....Why The Bad Reputation?

Most of the "evil silkie" posts I have seen were very tongue-in-cheek. They are evil because they take over your mind, and chicken math becomes inadequate in calculating the numbers of birds you want to and do bring home and/or hatch. THey take over you rlife and you suddenly find that playing with your chickies is far more fun than shopping the sale of a lifetime at your favourite store. In fact, your new favourite stores beome the grocery store for purchasing special treats for you babies, and the feed store for their regular food, and the pet store for toys for them and maybe even indoor cages. Oh, and of course chickendiapers.com and ...

You will find that your topics of conversation at an evening with friends becomes discussion on the merits versus danger of free ranging, correcting all the misassumptions prevalent about chickens, showing off photos of your darlings, explaining how silkies are so very different, and yet alike, other breeds, ... instead of convering on whatever it was you USED to talk about BS (Before Silkies).

It is well known that Silkies are evil and will steal your soul. That's why I won't have one.
Saw one last year at the fair, it took one look at me and tried to get my soul, but the last laugh was on him.

I have both hatchery silkies and show quality silkies. THe hatchery silkies are bright and clever and ferocious little mamas. I love them to pieces. The show line is impossibly sweet, even the roosters. I do have to trim up their crests, but once they can see they are as smart as the other chickens. My most evil rooster was a mille fleur d'uccle, followed by a buff orp. The silkies aren't even close.

Silkies are great broodies and great mamas. My only complaint is that they are impossible to break from a broody. Once they decide to sit on eggs, by golly something is going to hatch out. They are sweet and tolerant little hens. My other broodies will take your hand off. The silkies just yell a little, but they never peck.

Blueberry is my fiestiest one and she will peck n bite you when broody. She never has liked being handled dispite my best efforts.
Cinnimon is a cuddler, right now he is lonely because his girls are broody.
Rita is my sweet girl and a bit dingy.
Prudy n Peaches are nice. They are about 16 weeks.

I think they all are adorable.

i like my silkie she's a little skiddish at times but that could be because i dont handle her much. i would encourage anyone to do this, trim the feather fluff a lil away from their eyes it opens up their world! so many silkies can barely see with all that fluff! it causes them not to be able to get on the roost very well.

Silkies EVIL!!!

My Silkie Rooster Is Actually The Sweetest In My Mixed Flock Of Chicks He Sees Me Walk Up To The Run And He Runs Up To You!Now My Hens Will Do That But Not Till They See The Roo Brush Up Against You Like A Kitten! So Silkies Are Not EVIL!!!!!!!!!I Hate When People Say A Breed Is Evil Cause Of A Bad Roo Or Hen Or A Trio!!!!

My kids hand raised all of ours. They learned to perch on their shoulders pretty young and stayed there till they got kicked out of the house and into the bantam coop. I would say all of ours got at least a few hours per day being handled by the kids. They got baths and then got fluffed and then played with and special treats. They were featured in many videos and photos taken by the kids. A few times I caught them putting clothes from my daughters dolls on them. ( yes i saved them from that fate) All ours are super docile even when broody but they really had no choice but to become tame.
