My Fluffsquad of 12, 3 boys, 9 hens. Despite the odd ratio, they all get along fine even after a year had passed :) I was expecting issues with the youngest, Scruffbutt, but he is the most softest and docile of the three boys and always wanting to cuddle, despite being the largest!

In the first pic, Roo was wearing a collar to discourage him from crowing as part of his training. Now they don't need collars as they learned to not crow at specific times... Though will crow to get my attention if say, the water bowls are empty outside. :p

Edit: Oh, and I started with two, a hen and roo, and in less than a year they hatched 10 more chickens! :lau Silkies are tribbles!

I am so excited for my babies to get bigger! We only have 3 but i cant wait for them to mature and one goes broody i want to see a hen hatch an egg! Ive never seen that!(:

Hi welcome all to the world of silkies :frow. I only have raised silkies so I can not compare them to any other breed of chicken, except I raise mine with the helpful chicken information I have found on this site. The only 2 things that are different with my silkies and other chickens is because they don't fly and are ground birds, mine do not roost at night, they snuggle together in a pile on the floor of the coop nor will they use a ramp. However I have read other silkies owners state theirs do roost and use ramps. :idunno

You will see plenty of that owning silkies, that is for sure! Those darn things will even try and hatch eggs on my lap if in broodybutt mode. :lau

I find sets of 5 eggs are the best for silkies, at least ones the size I own. Any more and it may get chilled. The person I brought Rooroo and Hen-Hen from kinda wished she didn't sell me them due to how well they were breeding. :p 5 out of 5 eggs hatched with only humidity issues which required me to help a few and stick the rest in the Incubator and then handed the floofy chirping things back to mama.

The dad also helped look out for the peepers, though he occasionally sent some flying when dustbathing. :p

Mine roost, though they also like to lay on a chair in a big clump of fluff, with maybe Peep-Peep and the higher ranked hens perched on the top of the chair.

Those who don't manage to squeeze on before the chair is full get the lower perch, which includes Rooroo on occasion when the hens refuse to budge. :p

Aww what a beautiful family!! I heard silkies go broody alot. Some 2-3 times a year! Holy babies! Lol im excited!

Oh yes broodyness comes with the territory. And it’s like a communicable disease, once one is broody they all join in. My little girl Sugar hatch a clutch of 6 the end of February, she raised those now she has a clutch due to hatch Friday.

Even Silkie roosters like to raise chicks.
