Silkies!!

After they mature at 7-8 months when do they start fetilizing eggs and going broody? Over a year?

Yes they start laying around 7-10 months was the range for my pullets. My rooster was about the same age so he started mounting the pullets as soon as they squatted for him (about the same time they started laying). But I let them lay for a few months before I hatch the eggs, new laying pullet eggs are smaller and I’ve heard the chicks are weaker, so I wait.

As far as how old they go broody. Each one is different. My black hen in the middle picture started laying the end of October, laid about 10 eggs over 2 weeks and then went broody. It was winter and she was young so I didn’t let her hatch eggs, I broke her broody 4 Times between October and March when I finally let her hatch. I had another that started laying at the same time she’s over a year old and never has been broody.

Awe, good luck with all those fluffy silkie chicks!

We just had a black one and a partridge one hatch from the incubator. We've also got one of our breeders on 4 eggs right now. It's her first time being broody and her eggs should have already hatched. So hopefully all will be well and they'll hatch soon

And by the way do any of you know how to get a Sizzle? I know that you breed a silkie with it but I don't know what type of frizzle you breed with the silkie.

A sizzle starts is a Silkie breed to another breed to get different feather type usually Cochin. But the chicks are Silkie mixs and are not considered sizzle till many generations out of breeding back to Silkie to get Silkie standards with different feather type. A lot of genetics and selective breeding go into breeding sizzle/frizzle projects.

Thanks for all of the info but wouldn't the sizzle and cochin mix adyer it breeds with the silkier some more wouldn't it turn into a plain lod straight feather again? And also what color/type of frizzled cochin would you breed with the silkie? Also would you need a certain color of silkie to breed with the cochin?

I did a little research on it but it was too complicated for me and decided I don't have the room or knowledge yet for that kind of project. The goal is to have a chicken that has all the standards for silkie except feather type. People that do sizzle projects don't start getting good sizzles for a quite few generations of breeding. You have to know how the genetics come together (what is recessive and what is dominate) to produce a certain attribute in the chicks. A lot of hatching and selective culling to get it right, otherwise you are just breeding silkie mixes.

OK thank you so much! I also heard from someone else and they said breed a silkie and a frizzled cochin with a silkie and then breed a silkie back to the babies of the frizzled cochin and the silkie then you get a sizzle

So a roo is a rooster and a pullet is a hen? Any other names or terms i should know?
