Silkies...

I have had at various times prior to culling as many as 50 Silkies - Broody 1 in 2 years - I show them . they are way more work then any other breed - they can go down hill very fast if the crest isn't properly taken care of - the vault skulls are a gateway to TBI - They don't fly well so they are easy preditor bait - The stop laying at evey enviromental change - They can be just as mean as any other breed- the feet require constant care to keep in top condition -

All of these things keep me off the street I enjoy the work but they aren't the best "pet" chickens-

I like my non show quality birds because they are cute and they are rather marketable in the pet and asian specialty meat market...

As for maintence, they are not so good ad the don't get eaten thing, and are tiny. Luckily mine all have tiny crests so they can see, and lightly feathered legs so they don't get so dirty.

My kids wanted Silkies ((I

research them & thought well theirs will be pets so I gave in and we got 2))

They are the 2 on my picture!

I have I have 6 more now!

Reasons to have:
fun to watch
most are lap chickens (or maybe we just spend more time with them & they become lap chickens)
easy to catch
don't fly (this is a plus for me)
conversation peice (who ever comes over is amazed by them)

Mine are not show chickens I keep sand & pine shavings in my coop: I have no problem with feet as long as there is enough litter to absorb poop! (never had a problem)

I am not sure how my white ones stay so white but they do!!!

I have no extra work
