Okay, so I will sit for 30 minutes and shred old bread into tiny pieces so the chickens won't have trouble swallowing it.

I just watched our old bantam hen, Chrissie (about 8 years old), running around the yard with 3 other girls right on her tail. She had a frog in her mouth, legs sticking straight out sideways about 2 inches from either side of her mouth. One of the girls got close enough to get a leg. Chrissie finally got away, slammed the frog on the ground once, picked it up and swallowed it whole!

We'll see if I ever worry about choking them with bread again!

I know, this is useless without a picture, but it happened too fast to grab the camera.

It is amazing what they will swallow whole. I saw my girls with a large lizard one time, all chasing each other until one of them had enough time to just swallow it whole. I was worried about that hen for a day or so, but all ended up well. They are so much fun to watch chasing each other with something in their beaks. :)

Its crazy the things those little carnivores will eat! I've found my chickens trying to eat huge toads before. Ive also found them eating dead baby birds, mice, and huge cicadas. :sick

Aren't chickens funny! Mine go after lizards too, and MAN can they book it when chasing them! When I think of chickens I so do not think of "vicious predator" I think of prey animal... and while they are... they have the hearts of vicious predators if they can somehow fit something in their mouth.... and when they do get that "good" item they run like crazy away from the flock so they don't have to share. It cracks me up.

One of my girls that was only about 7 months old swallowed a mouse or a vole in one gulp!!! It was gone so fast I'm not really sure what it was but it was a LOT bigger than anything I thought they could swallow!
