When sillkies get their head poof, what do you do or use so that they can see better?
My silkies are only 13 weeks old so their poof isn't obstructing their vision yet, but I'm thinking about the future.
I told DH I was going to put child's barettes in their hair to hold it up out of their eyes, but then I wondered if the other chickens would peck at them? I'd hate to have to cut their beautiful poofs.

Oh....to each is own, but if I am going to exhibit the bird I pull the feathering around the eyes. Lift her out parallel to you and see if you can see the eyes fairly well. If the sight looks obstructed then hold a few feathers between you index finger and thumb and pull quickly, I think of it as no different than plucking my eyebrows with tweezers. At least there doesn't seem to be a large amount of discomfort to them.

Now, if it's a breeder and I'm not as concerned with looks I chop like a mohawk!! It would be better for her to look odd but easily be able to find his/her food and water in order to hatch healthiest chicks. They will molt out those cut feathers and look great after the breeding season.

Thanks

I trim as well for their safety in order to see not only food/water but any hawks. Our backyard is fairly suburban but have had 2 hawks dive bomb this summer/fall. The one or 2 I'd like to show would not be trimmed.
I trim around the eyes, into the crest and below the eye too. Be careful with scissors around eyes!
Silkies don't seem to have strong self preservation. But yesterday watching a buff hen with a couple chicks-----she's was crouched down giving the stink eye to my cat Sampson---she was fun to watch. Of all critters, Sampson is one of the last to pose any threat to chicks.

How sweet!
Okay, I'll trim, but I'm not going to like it. I liked the idea of barettes better.

Okay thanks for pointing that out. I was intending to use my smallest pair of sewing scissors, but they have very sharp points. I was looking at Jethro yesterday and his poof is already starting to block his vision.
