We are fairly new to chickens and will be entering some in the county fair soon. When you do this, should you have all one kind of chicken in your flock so that you don't have mixed breeds? Or does it work that way? How are the breeding habits? Do the roosters just breed with any old hen? Will the hen have salt and pepper chicks, or some of one full breed and some of the other?

I know this sounds stupid, but I don't know how this works. And since ya'll can't see me face to face to laugh at me, this is the easiest way to ask LOL!!

Thanks,
Jamie

You could get some ugly looking mutts. A roo will breed any hen he can catch. I like to keep all my breeds & colors separate so I have pure offspring. Mutts are not worth feeding. JMO.

Roos will have sex with any hen they can catch multiple times per day, so if you want to breed pure then you have to separate the breeds. Then breed true.

Our FFA show only allows pure bred on any animal entered.

While there are some ugly mutts, there are some gorgeous ones, too- and let's not forget that many of the most popular birds out there are mutts- they just call them 'hybrids' instead when they do it on purpose!

Sex link birds are all hybrids, as are Easter Eggers and many of the super layers found at the hatcheries, and they aren't ugly nor a waste of feed, but rather have fantastic feed to egg conversion and are very healthy, as a rule.

Good luck! I am personally hybridizing a few, just to see what happens!
