Silver Appleyard Hatching Eggs

I'm kind of over my duck limit now so if I end up with too many hatching I may have to see if any Washington based BYCers want some silver appleyards. :)

I've been checking temps regularly. I notice fluctuations between 99*F -101*F on the internal thermometer (inside the water weasel) and 100*F - 102*F on the external thermometer (at egg level).

The bottom is at 98*F-100*F and the top at the window is 102*F-104*F.

Humidity is at 42% with water on one side of the incubator but honestly I'm not as concerned about the humidity yet. I will start marking air cells in the next two weeks to determine the humidity adjustments.

So I candled Sunday night which is day 8 of incubation but the site wouldn't let me upload pics off of my phone for some reason.

I have 6 with veins for sure. 2 of them have red blobbies but not quite veins. 2 are definitely clear and no sign of life. I removed those. I haven't cracked them yet but I think they just weren't fertile. The 2 with blobbies I will hold out on and see if something develops. I'm not sure if it's the red ring of death. If nothing is further developed by day 10 I will just take them out completely and hope that the 6 make it to hatching. I did notice that the air cells were a little on the low side so I've added water the the incubator tray.

Ok so day 9 candle.

So I'm down to 5 fertile eggs. I checked on the temps last night and took off the top to allow cooling and one of the eggs definitely went bad. Really bad. It smelled and had turned discolored. I removed it and didn't even open it. I figured if it smelled that bad uncracked that I wasn't going to even try opening it.

The other 4 however have movement and are developing. One I'm slightly concerned about as it is very clear on one side of the egg. Not the air cell but it looks like maybe excessive albumen. The veins don't actually wrap around the inside of the egg as the others have. I will keep an eye on it for now. It's still alive and moving around so that's a good sign.

Air cells are saddle shaped which concerns me some and I added some water to the incubator as it seems they are a bit too big for this time of incubation. Hopefully these last 4 can make it to hatch but I've got 10 -11 more days to go.

Hoping for the best for the last four eggs. I candled this morning some of the eggs being incubated by the Muscovy and four were infertile/dead. In all three girls are sitting on a total of about 44 eggs of which 6 are from my mallard derivatives with the remaining being Muscovy. First hatch should be in about a weeks time, then the others within the first and second week in June

Ok so down to the last week and I have 3 eggs left that were viable. 1 more egg ended up going bad. It had a malformed duckling. The 5th egg I wasn't sure about just stopped developing as well. Looks like bacteria started so that one is out as well. That leaves the three.

2 look really good and are fairly developed but the third I'm not sure about. It's got a lot of white area in the bottom. Not the air cell but looks like albumen. Air cells are very saddle shaped almost on both sides of the egg. it's very odd looking. Not sure if these guys are going to make it to hatch. I would think this last week that the egg should be fully dark with the duckling fully the size of the egg but it seems like at the bottom of the egg there is still a lot of space even on the more developed eggs. Oh well, all I can do is wait. Lockdown happens in 1 day.

Let's keep finger crossed and see how things turn out. It's sad though that the number of eggs you started with has reduced to just three. One of the girls is to begin hatching tomorrow so I'm leaving everything to her. She is sitting on 15 eggs.

I should have stuck these eggs under the wild duck that has her nest across the street and had her hatch them. I'd probably have had more success.
