I thought I would try a SLW. We have named her Lucy Van Pelt from Peanuts because literally, from the moment she arrived at 2 days old, she is very assertive. She RUNS to your hand and then pecks at your nails. She's got the others doing it now and they are not SLW. She takes over the food dish, likes to stand in the middle of the flock, sometimes sleeps off by herself while the others pile up, wakes up the others by running over them. Are SLW's dominant birds? She has made it clear to the others she is the boss. Right now I think it's adorable. The problem will be when we integrate them with my Barred Rock who is pretty much the boss between her and my other silkie. I would hate to have to re-home the SLW but I have heard they can cause a problem for established pecking order. Here is my little tyrant in the making trying to eat the camera. Thanks in advance!

Well a reason the SLW is coming to your hand and pecking at it is probably because it expects food or its just curious and brave enough to go up yo you. My two SLW are also very curios and always run up to my hand as well. There will always be a dominant in each flock. Right now since she is just a chick, she owns the chick flock. When she meets the barred rock they will eventually sort something out.

I've noticed the same of my two, especially the GLW. Wonder if it's a personality trait of the breed, similar to how speckled sussex tend to be chatty and loud.

It is.

My SLW chick recently died, but he sure was a bossy thing as well! He was always "in charge" He was adopted by my broody duck, and her ducklings became his brothers/sisters. He was always on Mama's back and bossing around his siblings. He was a week older than them, but they towered over him and still, he was Mr. Boss Man.

My SLW is most certainly the head of the flock. She tries to be the boss of me too; I think she considers me part of her flock because I spend so much time with them. When I go out to hang out, she tries to nip my ankles, toes and hands. She has to be reminded several times a day that I am, in fact, the boss of all of them! LOL!

I think it's so funny, but my SLW (and my GLW) are bossed around by our tiny bantam Golden Sebright! She rules the roost, even over these assertive Wyandotte girls.

hahaha! My bantam hen (she's a mutt I think, but I really don't know) competes for top hen with my RIR and Barnevelder. They kinda take turns being in charge. It's hilarious watching that tiny little hen chase around the big girls (and boys). She doesn't take "no" for an answer.
