Hey Everyone, my Silver Laced Wyandotte crowed this morning for the first time and he/she is exactly 5 months old. Can anyone tell me if I have a cockerel or a pullet by these pictures?

If the bird crowed, it is a cockerel. Though I've never seen one in person, I do know that some Silver Laced Wyandottes are "hen feathered". This means that they don't develop the obvious male plumage.

Your bird still looks very hen like. Are you sure that it crowed?

X 2 - if you physically saw *this* bird do the crowing you seem to have a hen feathered SLW, but if you just heard a crow and saw this bird in the general area immediately after I would suspect you may have another bird in your coop that is responsible -- if there is any chance that is what happened I'd go ahead and snag some pics of your other birds so we can help you find the culprit.

Bummer, I cant have a rooster in my neighborhood. I have heard of hens that crow on occasion so I'm hoping this is the case but if not does anyone want a rooster?

Yep, I watched it open its beak and let out its first attempt at crowing. I'm hoping it doesn't happen tomorrow morning but I will keep you posted if you like?

It was most definitely the SLW that crowed this morning and trust me we were shocked! This is by far my favorite bird and I will be very sad if I have to give him away!

Here is a video I found on you tube of some Golden Laced Wyandotte hen's crowing, maybe its some weird anomaly inherent to this breed?

Older hens, often with reproductive disorders, may crow but a young pullet will not.

Are you sure it was an attempt to crow and not some pre egg laying squawking? I would expect a cockerel to start crowing long before 5 months of age.
