silver laced wyandotte

My SLW's from McMurray are nice little hens, not the friendliest of my flock, but really excellent foragers (maybe just a little too bold in going where no one else will go, but they like to forage in the pasture right underneath my big Fresian gelding which affords them pretty good cover!) good layers, and absolutely beautiful birds. Show quality? No, but great just the same, which is true of all the chicks I got from McMurray.

It's true that if you want an ideal Wyandotte you should go to a breeder. Many of us want egglayers only & cannot get rid of roosters from a straight run batch from a breeder etc., nor do we want to. I change my flock every 2-3 years, so hatchery birds fit the bill. Everyone needs to think of why they want chickens, how long they will keep them & what their purpose is going to be. Get them from a breeder is not always the best route for everyone. I got my first Wyandottes from Meyer last year and they are great. They are laying like crazy & they are large birds, I really like them. Very pretty except against the snow! They are Columbians and look rather dingy right now.

They do wonders on keeping the horse pasture raked.
