Simple worming question

Hey there BYC,

We recently wormed out flock after adding 3 new hens in (we quarantined and did a 2 week look/don't touch approach) because we saw worms in one of their droppings. We could not ID the worm type so we went and got Safe-Guard (Fenbendazole) and treated the ladies according to dosing instructions I found on here (.23ml/lb of bodyweight) Through my research here I saw if the worms could not be ID'd that 5 days of medication should suffice and that for roundworms its typically a dose on day 1 and a follow on dose at day 10.

My question is, how long should we continue to see worms in their droppings for now that our course with the de-wormer is done? It's been about 48 hours since our last dose and I still see some in a few droppings here and there. Obviously de-wormer will force the worms to be passed out the system but I am wanting to be sure we knocked out the parasites that were making themselves at home in our ladies. Should we do a follow on dose at the 5 or 10-day mark since I assume that worm eggs could get picked up again somewhere or are the hen's system now worm resistant for some time?

Welcome To BYC

Can you please post some photos of the worms you are seeing?

I have seen roundworms being pooped out 3 days after giving the first dose of Fenbendazole. After that, I've never seen any even after giving the second round (10th day dose). They don't always get pooped out though so keep that in mind.

You're correct. Most of the time they are absorbed as protein in the intestine. The later dose kills worms hatched from eggs missed during the initial dosing.

Safeguard is an excellent wormer and I've used it in my birds. I prefer Valbazen, the first dose, then the second dose 10-14 days later. Done. No need to dose 5 days straight.
