Greetings. I’m Jane, and finally became a backyard chicken keeper in the Philadelphia suburbs last February after many years of thinking about it. I’m sorry I waited so long! A neighbor had 3 hens - specifically Faverolles - needing to be rehomed and I had already purchased a coop tractor so I was ready to go. I have a 12 raised bed vegetable garden and the chickens have had their own penned in area adjacent to this. Unfortunately we’re now down to just 1 hen as an early coccidia situation may have caught up with us. My husband and I are considering where to go from here, one option being transferring the operation to our cabin in New Hampshire where I am hoping to spend this coming summer. It’s complicated, and I look forward to getting advice from this community.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
You will run into the same situation again with a new strain of coccidia in a different location if you move the lone hen to NH.
Acknowledged. We are currently having a necropsy done on the hen that died which will help narrow down the options. Most likely we’ll start over with a new flock if we go the NH route.

First off, sorry about the loss of your chickens. Hope your lone hen is doing okay.

Second, what a great garden set-up. I am hoping to expand my raised beds this spring, but they still won't come close to your lovely garden.

When you rebuild your flock, wherever, will you get Salmon Faverolles again? I have two, and I absolutely love their looks, their gait and their personalities. When Celeste injured her leg and I had to take her to the vet, she complained LOUDLY every time she was touched anywhere. Her majesty wasn't being hurt; she just wanted to register her displeasure with having a human put hands on her.

Welcome to BYC; it's good to meet you. Best wishes with future flocks!
