Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

Could be...but what about the lung and intestinal lesions....metastasis? I've killed a few of my old hens this past year that were going into ovarian cancer....they had small eggs that were black and when burst had black/green fluid come out and their ovary was starting to have the look of the one in that second pic.

That top picture of the three is the hen....the other two are human, but I couldn't separate them. All of those little nodules are tumors....ovarian cancer seeds the abdomen and it metastasizes as well. That top picture of mine shows all of the same nodules as the necropsy photos. I think it is full blown ovarian cancer.

Hens are the only other animal that spontaneously develops ovarian cancer.

BC, that second pic is a bird also? It seems to have feathers? Hey, I bet you are sure tuckered out tonight after your day of running back and forth!

Oops...sorry Bee...I glanced and saw it labeled "Uterus"......didn't notice the feathers.....LOL. Here is the staging of ovarian cancer in hens:

Staging of ovarian cancer in laying hens
Stages Characteristic features
Stage I Growth limited to the ovary; very little or no ascites
Stage II Tumor extended or metastasized to the oviduct, moderate ascites
Stage III Tumor seeding metastasized to the pelvic organs; peritoneal and abdominal implants; gastrointestinal tract and superficial liver metastasis with profuse ascites.
Stage IV
Tumor metastasized to distant organs including liver parenchyma and lung; multiple solid tumors in mother organs with profuse ascites.

That is what she has...stage III or stage IV ovarian cancer.

Thank you BC. I think you diagnosed it perfectly! That was such an odd experience. Thank you for the photos to show the same.

I did put the carcass as well as all the broth into the trash today. Just didn't know what to think about it all and didn't want to take any chances. Glad it isn't something contagious!

Knowing that it is not contagious I'm sure takes a big weight off your mind. Here is the article the photos came from. It is a study of hens with ovarian cancer that was done to correlate with ovarian cancer in women. The article has some really good pictures:

She was an Andalusian. I've been raising them for 10 years and this is the first time this has happened. She is actually a bird I got from someone else about 3 years ago and I don't know if I have any offspring from her or not but if I do, I imagine if this is any kind of a genetic thing, I'll know about it before too long.

Excellent info! That explains all of these findings in her organs and the massive ascites.
