I'm so pleased for you!!! Now, what kind of geese are these again? Will you keep them and raise them? Will you harvest down from them and even eat the offspring? I'm curious as to what most folks do with geese nowadays. I wanted some for awhile but I really needed a bigger place in order to have such large fowl at the time.

They are Buff and Embden, some a mix of both so the lady that gave them to me said... I have no idea if they are good/bad breeds... I hadn't planned on keeping any of the hatchlings, but DH informed me Sunday that he would like to keep one or two, I am guessing two.. My brother and his wife just moved onto 5 acres and their kids do 4H, they will take all others that hatch.. I'm not sure what we will do with them, we have only had goose one time and it was ok, could have been the ay it was cooked but I don't believe I was overly impressed. I'm not for sure and would depend on the temperament of the birds, I have little GK's that love to spend time here and help Poppy and Nanny around the "farm"..
If it works out and we find them easy enough to raise then we will allow them (if we get male and female) to breed and then go from there.

That is IF I can get them to hatch.

Embden is one of the breeds they breed for down production...now that would be cool, wouldn't it? Doing a live harvest of down in season and making your own pillows and such. I don't know how they will do around kids....geese are so loud and can sometimes be aggressive...I wonder if you can train them out of that like you'd train a rooster? Hmmmmm......

I do believe I have caught the incubation fever that has always left me wondering about folks....this batch of eggs is so textbook perfect that I can hardly stop candling at least one egg as I go by the nest just because I can see the chick moving around in there! All those other times I couldn't see that until towards the end and that was only on this last nest. Now I have so many eggs with veins, eyes, moving chicks, etc. that I'm just tickled to death when I look in an egg!!

NOW I know what you guys were talking about and it's purely addictive and brings me such joy to know there are growing, living little chicks in those eggs and they all look so healthy and on a normal growth pattern! I'm simply amazed and overjoyed!

Sorry if this sounds repetitive but I just have to shout about it to someone or I'll just burst! This has been a long time comin' and it's like the sun has come out after a week of hard rain.

How can you train them out of being aggressive? This guy is small but becoming a terror I have been shoving him away being the alpha and breaking up any tiffs between him and the other rooster he doesn't go after me as much since then but is really bad whenever anyone else goes into the run. Any tips appreciated. :)
