Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

Yep I can't wait for pix either. I need to get some of my chicks to since they have grown so much. I saw a HUGE difference in these than the ones I raised last spring. These parents being fed the FF and all. These seemed more alert at a much younger age and just was more calm acting. They took to the ff right off and have been eating it ever since. I am probably going to put them out in the big pen tomorrow with the big chickens but in a separate pen so they can get used to one another. I need to get some netting up around it to keep out any snakes though. It's already around one wall but need to put it around the other 3. I think I am going to have a few roos outta this batch as well but those WILL go in MY POT this year and not someone elses. ;-)

Rosemarie, you have come so far, haven't you?

Going to eat your own roos!!!

That's good feedback on the difference in chicks and I'll be watching these RIR chicks beside my own hatch, though they are at least 3 days ahead of my batch.

Quick update...had a single blonde chick last night with grey tinting under the blonde and just a small feathering on the shanks but not the full Cochin feathering~the egg was iffy whether it came from a Del or a WR, but those big, orange legs look like WR legs to me~that chick practically exploded out of the egg, the pipping was so quick! The only one that wasn't black so far! So two were taken to the brooder this morning, two still too new to take into that rough and rowdy crowd so are still in the nest.

Two eggs left, one pipped externally, one pipped internally...both look to be BA eggs and pretty small compared to the rest. If they make it out I'll have 8 healthy chicks to show for this experiment and I think that will conclude if it can produce chicks and if they are healthy and normal in activity~no splayed legs, no wry neck, no malabsorption of yolk, etc.

Not bad, huh?

I'll gather all the chicks from this hatch when they are on their feet in the brooder and will get a group pic, if I can...they are running around like bugs up there! The ducks are eating the feed, BTW, and all TSC stock are still with us. The meat chick I accidentally stepped on the other day died last night, which I sort of expected and was going to put it down today anyway.

And to God goes all the glory, for giving me the idea, for giving me all of you most wonderful people to help me get it straight, and for viable eggs for hatching. Thank you, Lord, for all your comfort, diligence and guidance you've provided. In Jesus' name, Amen!

This is all amazing news Bee I'm so glass to hear it.

Foxy, you on a mobile again?

Names suggested for the chicks are as follows...thanks to BCMaraniac:

Now, about names....Hoot, Hootie, Hooter(the big breasted one...lol), Nanny(as in Hoot-n-anny), Holler(as in Hoot-n-Holler),Whogivesa,, Idontgivea, Thatsa. That should about cover it, since you said you had 8 eggs.

I will! I'm going to write it up on a page on the learning section, with pics and video, and am going to coin a name for it....just so it won't get all twisted out of recognition by the masses before I can even get it down in history.

How are you feeling today? Have a nice hot bath last night?

I'm always on mobile and I hate it...

But I do love those names!

I had a big cup of my Angel Mama tea last night, no crazy contractions as a result, so I think I am safe to sip some more. Husband dearest told me not to worry so much about his work and to just go ahead and try and do whatever I can to get this young lady out.

Will leave all the details out, but yes, we're trying

I'm so backwards. I get pregnant just THINKING about getting pregnant, but getting them out is a whole 'nother story. Most women have to try to get pregnant and then have trouble keeping them in long enough

(I actually thought about being a surrogate mom once upon a time... but I am getting too old and I have my own family to worry about. Helping some kids in my old age will be good.. so many kids, so little time. Atleast I feel we 'saved' my step-son.. cramming proper social behavior, the value of money and hard work and common sense into his little head isn't easy when his entire family has seen the inside of a jail more than once, can't keep a job and can't keep a home/car. But, that is another story.)

I am really excited about trying your hatching methods, and even though I have followed the thread from the beginning, it would be great to have a condensed "this is what works" version

You're getting to be quite the authority on chicken keeping. People often point in your direction for examples on how to raise cornish X properly, to learn about fermented feed and now you can add natural incubating to that. Might have to consider writing a book

I adore your handsome WR stud. He's quite the rooster! I'm not even a chicken and he makes me swoon.

Yeah....I've heard that a time or two...or a hundred.

Everyone wants a book and I've tried to write it a time or two but then my attention span for it wains and I can't get back to it. Writer's block, big time. No enthusiasm...usually this comes after a bout with some ingrate that wants to complain because the free information I post here isn't up to their standards and they want me to validate their flock keeping instead, or they want me to do everything for them instead of them pointing and clicking at Google.

It makes me tired and so I lose interest in helping others find all the information I post in one neat little book, even if it would make scads of money....I just don't find money as important as other folks find it to be. Take it or leave it, easy come, easy go. God provides at all times.

I'm the same way... Got plenty of ideas, the whole actually sitting down and DOING it.. that's a different story. Money

It's the great demotivator..

I suppose all the knowledge is here for us to find, we just gotta look for it.
