I got 8 silkies from TSC 4 weeks ago. One of them has a single comb and 4 toes, but looks like a normal silkie. Hoover’s must just have some really bad genetics. I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this. Needless to say I will not be breeding this one so I hope it is a cockerel so I do t feel bad giving it away

Are you sure its a silkie? can you post a pic, make sure to post one of its feet too. Ive not heard of a silkie having only 4 toes before, are its legs black?

I would be very curious for a pictute as well. I haven't gotten chicks from TSC before but I have from other hatcheries... none of the silkies were ever good quality! Crossed beaks, 6 toes, no feathers on their legs, charcoaled partridge... the list goes on. Nevertheless they are sweethearts and great broodies!

Last year I got some good silkies from tractor supply. I asked they used privet hatchery last year, and briefly McMurray so im not quite sure which one mine came from. I think privet though. Its in my own state so they ship so fast they are usually very good healthy chicks from privet. Im going to order some straight from them soon, the only negative I've had with them is you have to order a minimum of 30 bantams which adds up to about $125...
(i think My tsc is using hoover now though)
Anyway i got 8 silkies, all were pretty good, except the buffs roos, 1 had a single comb one and 1 had a red walnut instead of dark. But my blue splashes are nice looking and my whites too. I sold the buffs since they were too far from the breed standard i didnt want to be breeding them...

The last several years silkies at the local TSC have been of exceedingly poor quality. No crests, missing toes, poor foot feathering, single combs, over sized, hard feathered, and the list goes on. Last year one shipment was of such poor quality that they sold the lot at 50 cents apiece when they were several weeks old and unsold.
