We have 4, 11 week old chickens (3 hens 1 cockerel). The mother hen died six weeks ago suddenly, since then our older Cockerel has taken on role of parent. We tried to introduce an older hen thinking they needed a mother to help bring them up but the cockerel just attacked her and would not let her near the chicks. In the end we had no choice but to re-home her. Now they all live as a happy little family eating and sleeping together. At night they snuggle up to him sometimes even sleeping on top of him.
I know we may have problems to come when the younger cockerel gets a bit older but at the moment they seem such a tight family unit. The only time there are any issues is when we put out cucumber which is Dads favourite and this is the only time he will chase them off rather then let them eat first, but he needs to let them know there place in the pecking order and it is his favourite.
