A while back we had a single quail hatch. He did very well using this technique. This has worked for someone else too.
If you get a single chick give it the following:
Now the mirror can provide him some company, the brooder is see through so he can see what's going on with you (his mama), the toy is for comfort since he doesn't have other chicks to huddle with, and somewhere to hide to get away from the action.
You want the brooder in an active room, like the computer room. Start handling on day one. Try not to pick him up off the ground or grab at him. Just lay your hand near him and offer food. He will get used to your hand and come and sit on it at times. When he starts peeping talk to him and spend a lot of time with him. When he gets feathers you can start holding him and he can be a TAME QUAIL.

- Small Fluffy Stuffed Toy
