Six months and still no eggs: Silkie and d'Uccle

Quote:
We (So Cal) may not technically have a "temperature" winter but we certainly have a reduction in daylight which plays a strong role in egg production.

Do your girls free range? They may have a hidden nest.

According to
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.php

San Diego: January first rise set times 0651 1653 about 10 hours
Redding: 0733 1653 - 9:20
Portland 0751 1638 -8:40
Bellingham 0803 1624 - 8:20

1 hour 40 minutes is quite the difference. You might have a little less sunlight but not as bad as others. Having grown up in the NW, and now living in Sac. I love the extra light.

I don't think there's a hidden nest. They do free-range, but only under my supervision. I'm not saying it isn't possible (wouldn't take much to outsmart me

) but I know their patterns and I've never seen an egg anywhere.

I wasn't expecting much out of either of them, but I did think they would at least lay an egg now and then. Nada. Zip. And it's January!

Our d'uccle and OEGB bantums (5 total that gave us about 8-14 eggs a week total) were laying soooo regularly up until The end of November that I was planning all kinds of cool hor'deurves with the bantum eggs for Christmas parties. Then, without warning, nada, nothing, zilch, zip - no cute little eggs to cook with.

Our LF are still laying 12-16 eggs a day from 29 LF hatched late March and late April. Compared to 22-24 eggs daily from same LF group in the fall with longer daylight and at that time, i dont think all of the EE were laying yet. But we are 0 for 5 for over a month with the little girls.

That being said, when we get new birds in the spring, I will get more bantums, one, they are cute, two they don't eat much, and three, they round out my flock as cute "eye candy.". And while I consider our birds farm animals, and not pets, I love the color variety, size, their slight flightiness, I just really think the bantum eggs are adorable too!

Add to that that I would like to hatch out some eggs naturally, I am hopeful the girls will brood for me.

So, hang in there, I'm confident you'll get an egg eventually, but not til longer daylight.
