Well....I spent 2 hours on the phone today....calling every vet in the phone book. I have talked to vets in ohio, KY, and IN. Most every vet I talked to suggested I have her put down....well....most said..." I would just kill the bird, no chance in saveing her"

NO WAY!!! So..I called Perdue Extension where I was put in contact with Mr Applegate aka: Turkey Specialist. The drug...Emetryl...was pulled from the market over 10 years ago. He had no real idea what to do, so he forwarded me to a Mr Bryan, also with Perdue. He and I had a great chat and he even complimented me for trying to save the hen altho he suggested I NOT breed her, due to probable liver damage from Blackhead disease. He suggested FLAGYL. You can get it from the vet. 1/2 gram in 1 gallon of water...I think he said 3 to 5 days. I will have to go back over my notes. ALSO....he said there is a food additive to "prevent" Blackhead in turkeys...called HYSTOSTAT. It is NOT in the feed I buy....so I am now on the hunt for it. A few days ago, one local old timer vet told me to use the Sulmet and vit/electrolytes in her water, for 3 days. She has been on that for 3 days...and today....she is up...walking more, and eating and drinking some. Still not back to her old self. I started the Flagyl today...and will try to save her. I will keep you all posted....still hopeing I can save her.

Justusnak, is the flagyl powder or tablets? the dosage is 1.5 gram per gallon of water or 250 mg daily. if its 250mg tablets the most effective way is to give one down her throat. and it affects the intestine and blind pouches before affecting the liver, so maybe she is ok...see post 8
And also keeping the chickens and turkeys separated and keep them on a bi monthly worming program(levamisole sheep oblets) the histostat in the feed wont be necessary..

Pine grove....They are tablets. When I talked to the vet....I told him what was suggested by Mr Bryan... 1/2 gram per gallon of water....and my vet gave me 2 pills. Said it was for 1 gallon of water. I dissolved one in 1/2 gallon of water, and offered it to her. She is drinking it...so I am hopeing it is enough. The vet...did not put anything on the bottle, other than the name of the pill..and TURKEY. Im not likeing this vet...but he is close to me. We are very rural. I think next week, I will be looking for another vet.
