Hello All!! Since my wife and I are new to haveing chickens I am just curious about something. Our babies are 15 weeks old so I probably still have a little time to wait. But I was wondering what is the average size of a chickens first egg.I have heard that sometimes they are very small and I would'nt want to miss our very first egg.
    Thanks for any comments.

    Congrats and welcome.

It is true that often the first few eggs from a newly laying chicken may be on the smaller side for a while. And, as I'm sure you know by now, even when mature, some chickens just lay larger eggs then others.

So, basically, do not be disappointed when your chickens lay for the the first few times. If they are standard size chickens, their eggs should be at least 2" long and about 1.5" w.

    Enjoy

They are smaller than they will eventually become - - but they aren't so small that you won't see them!!!

    My pullets started laying @ 20 weeks - they are 23 weeks now - - I remember
saying "Hmmmmmmm I think my Umbrella Cockatoo's eggs were bigger than these!!" Not sure of the weight but I would
say they are about an inch and a half long - -
They are a touch bigger now but not by much - - my Australorp's eggs are definitely bigger than my Wyandotte's -
and my Wellie's eggs are the most beautiful dark mahogany brown with speckles! So far 4 out of 7 are laying...and
they have all used the nest boxes save for one which was down in the run.....must have surprised her!

Have fun! The waiting is soooo hard to do but one day soon you will have breakfast! [IMG]

These are my first two eggs from my Welsummer hen along with a Jumbo supermarket egg in the middle. I'd say they are about 2/3 size:
