Sizzle breeding question

Quote:
If life hadn't thrown me the blue with red smooth I was planning on keeping entirely with the BBS that Sarah had begun.

I don't have a huge problem with culling so I think I might do two different sets. The blue and red smooth over the blue Sizzle pullet and another of the Splash Sizzle over the blue pullet. Then using the best of both. And probably if I keep her here the Splash to the Black Sizzle pullet.

I need to keep fewer right now (selling much of my stock to help pay for a root canal) so I'm going to be sticking with only three or four birds. One smooth male, one Sizzle, and the two Sizzle pullets. When the Splash goes back to Sarah, then I'll at least have something to work with. Though she's talking about sending me a smooth and then just sharing eggs - also makes sense.

one of the statements was it would produce a frizzle

what does this mean?

are the sizzles not frizzled?

what is proved with so many smooths that don't look like silkies

isn't a sizzle supposed to look like silkie with hard frizzled feathers?

and how in the breeding do you keep the hard frizzled feathers and yet bring in silkie breeding?

that is why genetically you all are having a hard time breeding sizzles as you can't come up with a sizzle that throws silkie characteristics with cochin frizzling

too much bringing in plain birds all the time
PS can sarah bring on some of her photos she has on her web site on sizzles?

any questions email me

Smooths are not "plain birds" they're the smooth product of a Sizzle breeding. They're used to prevent "Frazzles" a form of sizzle that does not do well.

Out of my seven - I had two excellent and one good Sizzle, and one not great sizzle. Given that that's a fourth generation attempt at creating a breed - it's actually quite good odds.

All four with Sizzle characteristics had all the silkie characteristics.

The smooths were about split, half and half, one not actually close with comb faults, the other closer. Both five toes, feather footed, dark skinned. I originally had a third smooth who hatched with a bad foot and hip and had to be eventually culled. That bird was the best smooth, with all of the characteristics.

Then I had one Frilkie - the one with the most silkie. He's a Roo, he has some hard feathering. He's blue.

In truth as a fourth generation this group produced along the breed guidelines and expectations.

While I might breed to a smooth sizzle at no point would I go back to a "plain bird".

That would be counter productive. While I'd hoped for a smooth female to use to prevent generating frazzles, it appears to not be an option.

When you are building a breed, you sometimes have to use what nature hands you.

So I'll be using Sizzle to Sizzle and Smooth to Sizzle and culling hard.

I wouldn't go to a plain bird. But someone getting in - who has ONLY ONE Sizzle - has even fewer options.

That's not wrong, it's just slower, it's just a beginning. I'd rather see them hatch eggs from some sizzle breeder and go from there but some folks don't hatch.
