skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

I saved a meat bird that fell off a truck. It had torn a huge chunk of skin off, pretty much like your girls. I really dont remember what I did for it, it was nearly 10 years ago. But it lived and was fine. Do what youre comfortable with, and if she looks like she is in pain, go ahead and cull her. But at least you know you tried.

Your hen can be saved---I'm saying this from experience. Two years ago one of my dogs completely ripped ALL the skin off of a hens back---everything was exposed as with your hen.

I brought the injured girl in the house......washed the wound with saline, then betadine......kept her confined in the spare bedroom with high proteing snacks and her regular food.......treated with Denagard in her water for 7 days.......applied neosporin liberally to the wound, then left the wound alone---I only messed with it to pick shavings, etc. out of it and reapplied neosporin when it started to dry out.

The hen re-grew skin AND feathers over the entire area. Last week she just hatched her fourth clutch of chicks for me.....

I had one just like that, sh got her head stuck through the chicken wire. I just applied neosporin, and seperated her. She healed without issue.

I had the same experience. Skin torn loose from the entire left side of the body. The skin regrew over the exposed area (the skin flap remains, hanging just below her wing) and - incredibly - the new skin even regrew feathers with nothing but neosporin, BluKote and TLC.

I would say as long as it's evident that she's not in unbearable pain, give it a shot. I am still amazed that my girl survived.

well for the next few hours im going to leave her be nice and quiet. later im nipping to the pharmacy and shall try to get antib gel/creme and childs aspirin (just in case)

im gonna give her a chance.....she looks like a fighter to me

Good luck, but really, the only reason she wouldn't make it, is infection. My girl was back in the flock pretty quickly. I think about 2 weeks.
