skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

If I could pipe in here. The mention of honey made me think of something. A friend of mine had a daughter who is highly allergic to antibiotics so she uses a special kind of honey that works miracles. It's called Manuka honey if I remember right. It has awesome antibiotic properties. It even cleared up a chronic skin infection on my friend that no antibiotic would help. You can find it online but may be able to find it in a health food store or naturopathic store. I guess it's kind of spendy but I would definately try it.

Don't think Im crazy, but I worked for a vet that treated chickens and when we had a Severe injury like this one, she would apply sugar to the wound and wrap it, just reg white sugar and very generously to wound and take bandgae wrap and wrap it up good and change and re sugar every day...I saw a dog with a paw so open and horrible and I said NO way was that paw able to be saved and it Was...took a long time but it came back....However I wouldnt do anything unless you get pain meds from a vet ! And antibiotics, the poor thing must be in severe pain.

To chickygirl2:
you said that you were introducing younger chickens into the flock when that incident happened?
Do you know if that was from a rooster or from the flock as a whole that was doing it? In both cases, there are solutions and ways to introduce new ones so that the established guys can see them but not hurt them.

My opinion, if you are going to try to save her I would see a vet. The skin that is torn off is most likely going to die. It may be able to be saved by sewing it back into place, but I am not sure. Her neck is open to bacteria and all kinds of other 'nasties'. I had a duckling that had similar injuries (not as bad as yours), and it did not make it. You need to do what you feel is the best. Your biggest problem is going to be infection and how to reattach the neck skin (and if the skin is savable)

I think she already removed the skin. That was probably the best thing to do in this case, as the weight from it was pulling her head down. There's no reason this hen shouldn't make it if she keeps that wound clean. I've brought back a duck that was half dead from a mink attack. He couldn't even move his neck because it was so tore up. This hen is scratching around and has the will to live. If a trip to the vet is not in the budget I don't think it's necessary.

hi all. many thanks for all the responses. just a little update, chicken is still eating and pecking around, ive let her out the cage and she seems happier roaming the room. but......im a little worried. im not sure if its just my eyes but the tissue around her head looks somewhat swollen? is this normal?

yes the skin has already been removed as she caught it in the cage and ripped it more causing further injury

Just wanted to chip in that if the bird is willing to put up a fight and isn't in too much pain to go for it. Never had a skinless chicken problem but have had to deal with horses and dogs that came home with a chunks of skin gone. It'll could get extremly gross/wierd looking, but for some reason if it's just the skin that's gone, they tend to heal up well. As the other people have said, keep her clean, keep antbiotics on hand to stave off infection and she should heal right up.
