skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

Spish that is so amazing that she is up and alert and ready to eat.. about the wound drying out, maybe you need to readjust those heat lamps or if you have her in a warm inviroment maybe she doesn't need them now that the shock is wearing off. I don't know but you've sure gotten alot of great advise on here which goes to show ya, we're all pulling for Holly and for you too.. all the best.

Wow! What a blessed little hen, and you must be an awesome chicken momma to be willing to do all this for her! Your kiddo's are going to learn lessons in love, patience and caring thru this!

I haven't read all the posts, but I saw where someone recommended a silver ointment and I can certainly attest to how wonderfully well those work. Docs used to put silver into the eyes of newborn babies cuz it prevents infection so well. I had a sweet banty hen attacked last summer, lost all the feathers on her belly, rump and one leg, as well as some deep open wounds, one the size of a quarter. I have liquid silver which I put into a small sprayer so that I could mist it onto her with rubbing the skin/wound at all. Also, it didn't hold in moisture that way. Aloe vera gel or juice is very healing and I put that on everywhere after the first day to soothe and start growing new tissues.

Also, raw (uncooked) honey is awesome on wounds. Totally antibiotic, safe. Also used by docs until after WWII. Perhaps you could thin it with distilled water a bit so it wouldn't pull to apply it.

At the health food stores you can get Bach's Rescue Remedy for shock, stress, fright and nerves! Wonderful liquid, works within minutes ~ I've used it on my kiddo's, my 80 yr old momma, dogs, cats, horses and my lil' hen last yr. There is a spray which works well for animals, just hold it a few inches from her face, or spray anywhere on her exposed skin where there's not another med. Its perfect to use immediately after an injury, but will help support her as she heals and starts to want to move about or wonders where she is!

Hope you'll keep us informed as she heals! Can't wait to see the pics of Holly all happy and healthy! Blessings to you all!

thanks all for the support, i think its gonna be a long time healing but hopefully it'll be a happy ending

One of my previous positions as a nurse was a treatment nurse. I did all treatments in the facility. Let me pass on a few jewels of wisdom that I've learned as it can also apply to animals. We never us betadine or peroxide unless a wound is infected as it can cause tissue damage to already compromised skin. For cleansing a uninfected injury we use normal saline and rinse the heck out of it. Blot dry gently and apply antibiotic ointment. My preference is Bactroban it is prescription but you can get it from a vet. They have it for animals too. Its the same but comes in a different color tube than the people ointment. I used it on a horse that got her leg caught under a fence and scraped about a 2x6" piece of hide of the inner aspect of her leg. Healed up real nice.

I will get up off my soap box and return you to the regular scheduled thread.

Thats good advise because even though I knew that about peroxide i didn't know it about betadine. So even if it's watered down we still shouldn't use the betadine?.

No. Unless there is an infection present. Then I would use Betadine or peroxide diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with normal saline. If you want to make your own saline boil a quart of water for 2 min. add a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda. Let cool and store in a squeeze bottle.

little update, nothing exciting to report really. no sign of infection so far, the wound has lost its 'wetness' but its not hard and scabby either..its like....well rubber really(!)
shes got home from work and shes ate every crumb she could find in the cage, flipped her water everywhere and basically made a hell of a mess....so she must be feeling better!

might give her a bit of outside time in the garden when the kids come home, let her stretch her legs a little
