Skinny Chickens

It not just Mrs Speckledy that is being affected right?
If the vet won't do anything for her and the others, My suggestion to you would be go to the farm store and get Corid or something I don't know what and start treating them!
I'm not saying thats the right or correct thing to do, but its what I would do! Anything is better than nothing. At least you would have tried, there is a reason that all of the chickens are loosing weight, that would mean to me that it was a virus or a bacteria, or something that has to effect all of them, its not like its just one chicken you said they are all skinny. I doubt it is worms as you just wormed them.
I don't want this to come off as harsh... but , Stop crying , stop wasting your good money on a vet that won't or can't help you and start helping your birds. Put them on an antibiotic, its worth a try! I hope you can save them!

Just to let you know, Mrs Speckledy died this evening.

In the UK you can't just buy antibiotics, they have to be prescribed by the vet, & mine won't prescribe broad spectrum ones to add to the water. Have asked & been refused.

Will post again once I have found out what was wrong, but the other four seem to have gained a little weight & were arguing over a boiled potato earlier

I'am glad the your others have put on a bit of weight.

Do you have a farm store there at all that the farmers get there supplies at? I don't know what it is like in the UK, but I would have thought that you could buy antibiotics for at least livestock, Maybe the farm where you got the chickens would have some suggestions on a vet that deals with livestock?
The vets in the area that I live in, some won't even see chickens and the others are very limited in what they will do with them. But I would guess that they wouldn't have a great deal of knowledge on them unless they were "Country Vets" for a lack of a better term.

Maybe you could ask your vet (or find a better one ) and ask for an antibiotic shot for each of your girls as the prior poster suggested. Maybe you could call around to different vets and ask about getting broad spectrum antibiotics for your chickens that you mix in the water?
Here in the United states you can't get certain meds for like Dogs, cats , but you can get the livestock meds at the feed store. Different areas of the world have different ways of doing things, I sometimes forget that, sorry.
Again I'm so sorry you lost your girl.

OK, it's official, my vets are a complete & utter bunch of idiots!

Phoned them this morning to advise of Mrs Speckledy's death & what to do re the post mortum. They told me that not only do I have to take her corpse 200 miles (there & back, so 400 mile round trip) to have it done, I have to pay £150 for the privilege................... I can buy 10 more chickens for that! Needless to say I can't afford that so no post mortum.

What I did do, is speak to an old school friend, who is now a vet, & it turns out, he is coming home tomorrow morning & will bring me a broad spectrum antibiotic I can add to the water for the rest of my girls. It's a shame he doesn't practise nearer home, otherwise he would have just gained himself care of the rest of the menagerie!

Can anyone tell me how I can weigh 4 squirmy, flappy chickens who don't want to sit nicely on a scale for me!

Put the chicken in a cardboard box with a lid. Weigh box and chicken - remove chicken -- weigh empty box and lid -- First weight minus second weight equals weight of the chicken

You could weigh yourself alone and than weigh yourself with each chicken. I don't think it would be precise enough though.

Could you put them in a basket (after weighing the basket first) and put a blanket or something over the basket to get an accurate reading?

Scales are forbidden in my house, but I have never noticed any losing weight.

So sorry about your hen

Glad your friend will help you out.
