Our hens are getting skinny and I am not sure if this is just part of the molt or a problem. It's not just the beautiful fluff they've lost, but I can actually feel the weight difference. These hens are about 3 years old and we got new chicks this past spring. One of them turned out to be a rooster, and he is busy (13 hens total)! Could this be part of it, and should I be concerned? They are on the same feed they've had since they started laying and there is plenty of it.

I agree with Duluth Ralphie - and maybe they need a better grade of feed. Is it possible wild birds, etc. are getting to their feed and not leaving much for your flock?

They definitely have plenty of feed. They get Dumor Layer Feed, but I haven't been able to let them range this summer like they did last (neighbors and daytime foxes). I'm looking for a way to expand their yard and will also look for a vet who'll check for worms. Thanks.

My hens never do well on Dumoor feed. If I am forced to buy that brand because the feed store is out of All Flock, in three days egg production is already decreasing.

I suggest changing to another feed and worming your hens.

When our girls go through a hard molt, they lose some weight (due to feather loss and they just don't seem to eat as much). Are your girls molting? If so, you may want to increase their protein intake with cooked eggs or tuna.

Good luck, thanks for joining us.
