    My Coop
Tonight when going to close up the chicken coop we found a skunk! It was later than they're usually put to bed because I had performing arts club until 6 and they're usually closed in at 5:15. The doors to their run and coop were open because they were playing in the yard. So anyways, I grabbed the flashlight (it was dark) to go put them away and my mom followed me. When I got to their run I was about to go in then my mom yelled, "A skunk!" I screamed and jumped back. I was immediaty worried for my hens! I saw no feathers or blood but also no chickens. I also didn't hear the usual noises they make when they hear me coming. My mom was yelling at the skunk to get out because she didn't know what else to do, we'd never ben in this situation. I don't know what the skunk was doing I only saw it one time and it was apparently eating the chicken food. There has been a reappearing hole in the chicken's run and I'm guessing that was the skunk coming in to eat their food. But anyways, my dad came back to help u. He banged on the chicken coop and the skunk ran out. By this time I was at the back of the chicken coop (house) looking in to see if the chickens were in there. I didnt see them! My heart dropped and I could feel the tears forming before my mom say "They're here!". They were all huddled in the corner, motionless and silent. I ran into their coop and gave them all reasurring hugs. They were pretty shaken up and defensive, one of them bit me :p.

I'm extremely happy that all my precious girls are alive!

BTW their beds are on a platform that is probably a little more than 2 feet above the ground and that really protected them! I that if they slept on the group the skunk would've pushed through them to eat their food and maybe even them! [IMG]So if you don't have this you may want to think about it!

I'm so proud of my babies for being smart and staying quite and still so the skunk wouldn't notice them! I'm totally at fault here because I should've closed their run and put them to bed early so they'd be safe. Lesson learned!

Hopefully you take something from this and protect your chickens to the maximum! Don't know what I'd do without them [IMG]

wow! glad they are all alive. I recently lost my favorite rooster to a very bold fox who attacked everyone during the day (while i was out there!) Needless to say, that fox is now a frozen fur in my freezer. [IMG]
