Skunk removal

You seem to be the one jumping to conclusions. As far as my own recommendation to the original poster, I'm guessing you assumed that when I used the term "relocate", I always took the offending animal to a place with rainbows and unicorns. Not likely. Not ever. I was trying to follow the forum guidelines, and the spirit of the thread. Not impose my almighty judgment on others.
You may have experience, but I've yet to see any wisdom.

This is an odd thread......I wish I had read the first post its made such a kerfuffle. Anyways you know he'll be back reading these posts even if he doesn't repost......Strange all the talk about teaching but non about learning.

Anyways. I hope you solve your skunk problem. I have never lost a bird or eggs to a skunk yet....so they are allowed to stay on my property as of now.

Oooookaaay.

I never had a skunk try to hurt my birds - they are usually just after the eggs.

I've relocated without incident by approaching with a tarp in front of me, covering the trap and putting it on the back of our truck(would not recommend putting in enclosed car).

I rigged a string so I could open the trap from a distance but be aware that those little guys fall asleep during the day and I had to poke it with a stick to wake it up.....even after a ride on the truck

Hi! We had problems with skunks a couple weeks ago. They killed about 14 chickens and a duck in about 3 nights. We couldn't figure out what it was. Then when my husband and boys went out, they caught them and shot 2. They got away and we thought they died. They returned 2 days later. They killed a big one. We know their are more but haven't been able to catch them. We have since bought a heavy duty 8 x 12 shed to lock up the girls in at night. I am glad they are safe now. We keep checking for the other skunks but only caught a glimpse. They came out like clockwork every night about 15-30 minutes after the sun went down.
They do kill chickens and are vicious. They seem to bite their heads and then move on to the next one!

Hopefully we can get them before it has babies! ughh

...back on topic.

I have relocated two skunks so far, I learned from a wildlife skunk professional. He told me that "most" skunks are not going to spray. Rural skunks are happy and calm and city skunks are unhappy and very irritable. Dress in plastic rain gear, pants and jacket, cheap stuff that you could throw away if you had to :p

Always cover the cage with a dark thick blanket, I used a black horse blanket. Move them in the morning after the sun comes out. Move slow and transport it in a truck (not a car or van) at least 5 miles away and 10 miles is better.

I opened the trap door and just flung the skunk out and hold the cage between myself and the skunk. The skunk always runs away...so far.

Too bad about the dirt getting into the cage, because skunks are not heavy animals like adult raccoons. Skunks are mostly fluff and spray! I would have used water to hose out the dirt and then moved the skunk.

Good luck next time,

Hugh
