SKUNK -vs- dogs... OH NO! HELP

Last year, while driving home, I had the misfortune of having slow reflexes as I came over a little hump in the road and ran over a skunk. The smell was

I tried so much stuff to try and get rid of the smell and had to drive with windows down in forty degree weather until a students parent gave me a can of skunk smell remover she had gotten from her vet. I don't remember the name of it but I tell you that stuff worked great. It took a few spray downs and each time it got less and less until after a couple of days it was gone.

Like I said, I don't remember the name but if you can reach your vet they might have it on hand.

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.

I am sorry to say that any fabric that the spray got on will probably need to be thrown out, but you can try washing in the above recipe.

Keep in mind that majority of the oil, most likely, is located in the front of the dog by his chest and neck so you should concentrate there especially well. (Please be careful not to get into pets eyes). Best to do one doggy at a time...and where your rubber gloves.

be careful with peroxide and natural fibers...

what does peroxide do to hair?......bleaches it.....it can do the same to some natural fibers....test on the back of the sofa first...leave it to sit for 24 hours and re check sometimes it can take a little while to show a reaction..

I would mix up some vinagar and water into a spray bottle and spray it on like fabreeze on you furniture. I also kept it around for a while because whenever my dog got wet he would smell a little like skunk still. A few squirts and all better. My husband couldn't smell it but I could.

The same thing happened to my MIL. Her homeowner's insurance paid to have a professional company come in and remove the odor. I have found that a good horse shampoo (I have a eucalyptus one that works well) removes the smell from the dogs better than tomato juice.

The peroxide baking soda mixture reacts chemically with the skunk spray and actually eliminates it. The formula I found on the internet said to use a small box of baking soda, a pint of hydrogen peroxide, and a couple squirts of dish soap in a gallon of water. For the dog you put it on and let it set about five minuted or so before rinsing it out. I don't know about the carpet. The good news is that the odor will lessen over time. Good luck.

Im not mad at the dogs. I understand how much they love chasing wild animals, and Im glad they do because they keep them away from the chickens and others outside.
I am mad at the skunk! lol
