Skunks - should I be worried?

Quote:
I am very shocked that the center of disease control would state that(not that I don't believe you)! Unless of course they are referring to native species, then well I agree 100%. It's a known fact that vampire bats ARE carriers of rabies and do not die from it(I watched a whole national geographic special on it recently) They were studying vampire bats/drawing blood and try to see what caused them to carry but not be affected by the rabies virus.

totally off topic: taraann81, you have a beautiful dog

Skunks that are out during the "day" do not necessarily have rabies or anything else. Everything that I have read says that if you see one out in the daytime, it is probably a mother with young to feed or young skunks out feeding along with mom. It says don't kill them assuming they are rabid just because they are out in the day.

Around here, we kill them no matter what time of day/night we see them. They are chicken killers and are not welcome on our property.

Well that makes sense as I have seen at least 2 or 3 young ones along with the bigger/older one.
This morning on my drive to work I saw a dead skunk on the road - it looked like an adult so the babies I saw may be orphans now.

I don't mind sharing my acreage with any varmints as long as they leave my gardens alone (reasonably alone) don't bother my animals & aren't destructive (also within reason).

Since my hens will be kept in a fenced yard when I'm not there & have limited supervised-only freeranging time, I don't think I need to start a campaign to rid my property of any particular species.
Subject to change depending on circumstances

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT CHICKEN IN YOUR AVATAR?

Again very sorry.

Carry on.

There are certain chickens that were bred to be completely featherless. I am not making this up...check it out through Google sometime if you're curious.
