Sleep on roosts?

Quote:
YES they are to young right now .

Only a few of my teens ( ages 12 - 14 weeks ) are beginning to roost with the hens . ITS so cute . Others all gather in corners of the coop and sleep on the pine shavings .

Yesterday, I got the scare of my chicken owning life! :o

I came home a little late and my older hen was already in the coop but I couldn't find my 14 week old hens. So, I circle the property trying to locate any evidence of them...nothing!

I look in the coop again and find them all asleep on the roosting pole in the high side of my coop. I had given up on the idea of any of my chickens using it. My older hen has never used it and it took the younger hens 5 weeks to figure out that they could roost on it.

So, I guess what I'm saying is be patient, they'll find it one day.

My dh put the roosting area on opposite wall from the nesting boxes . At the highest point of the roost its 6 ft. high . and he built the roost in step levels ... So they have a full roosting area that is 8 ft. wide and 6 ft. high . THEY love it and guess what ? THIS WAY , NO POOP in the nest boxes.

Mine slept on their roosts in the brooders but now that they are outside, they sleep all huddled together under their nest boxes. I have no idea why but they seem happy so I leave them alone.

How old are they ? Mine are still huddling together in corners of their new coop They are 12 - 14 weeks old . . The older hens are sleeping on their perches / roost . I think they start roosting when they get a bit older .

Ok, so I spoke too soon! I went out this morning to let the girls out. I peeked in the window first and 2 of my RIR's were on the roost!! So I guess patience is the key after all!
