Hi Everyone,

I am a first time chicken owner.
One of my hens, Batman, has been sleeping a lot, and one of her eyes is red and watery and shes keeping it shut a lot (the other eye is normal). It started yesterday evening but I thought maybe she was just sleepy (she's often the first to hit the coop for bed) and had something in her eye (yesterday she had escaped and dust bathed all over my newly planted pumpkin mounds), but she's still behaving this way today. She still has enough energy to run away from me, and seems to be walking just fine. She also is still eating, and her poo looks normal, but possibly a bit more solid that normal. The hen is a golden laced wyandotte, about 5.5 months old. I'm not positive shes laying yet - she is the last in the flock for me to confirm having laid an egg, as I haven't yet seen her in the nesting box. I suspected she would be laying soon if she's not already, because recently she's gotten a more red comb, has been getting a bit bigger, and a has got a more hen-like figure going on. Shes also been moving around pieces of wood shavings, which the others started to do getting ready to lay.

Because the eye ailment is in one eye, I was thinking it could possibly be a localized infection, or an irritant from something unrelated to the sleepiness if the sleepiness is related to being about to lay. Does this sound serious or like something I should address now, or should I wait a bit to see if it passes? If so, what can I do?

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or advice! I've included pictures of her daytime sleep posture, the normal left eye, and the messed up right eye.

Thanks!!

UPDATE:

Batman seems to have made a full recovery.

I gave her the 1ml Tylan50 orally twice a day for 5 days, and also used and eye wash and eye drops on her infected eye twice a day until it was all better (no more gunk, wateryness, or swelling). I also gave her some vitamins orally for the first few days and provided a water with electrolytes and probiotic. I kept her separate from the other birds during the day for about a day and a half so she could get some undisrupted rest. The eye was looking back to normal after 2-3 days and she regained full energy/activity after about 3-4.

Thanks!!
