Try Oxine. 1/8 tsp per gallon of water. Works wonders and is beneficial.

I use a baby bottle brush and dawn detergent to wash around the slimiest part of the plastic waterers when I change or fill the containers. the metal double walled fount types don't seem to get as bad as the plastic ones, and they're the ones out in the yard that the wild birds drink from. The plastic one's in the coop.

I agree, they seem to prefer mud puddles to the clean waterers.
