Hi all. Like so many others I find myself looking at pictures and reading up on sexing EEs. I have 3 that are over 5 weeks. I just want to get some opinions on feather development. I have read and seen pics, that roosters feather later than hens. Well they all seem to be feathering at the same rate but I do have one that looks behind when you look at the back under the wings. I took some pics of all three for comparison. I am guessing that feather development is not a sure way to tell. Im finding there is a lot of things that point to boy or girl but there is now for sure way until the rooster crows, and even that isn't for certain. I know we will have to wait a few weeks to be sure. Who ever said not knowing is half the fun must have never raised chicks.

Rooster, no that is a name fig if i called it that I would end up with a hen

I found out that the chick has to be bred a certain way with the K gene for the roosters to have slow feather growth and the hens fast growth. A lot of breeds are not bred that way and I am hoping that is the case for my Blue Cochin. This little thing is so cute and fuzzy but her wings barely have any growth after 2 weeks when all the other chicks, different breeds, have long wing and some tail feather growth. I really hope she doesn't become a he but I have to wait to find out.

Updated Pictures....

The EE's are now 8 weeks. Still same ol same ol. They all have small combs with no or little pink. Two of them have shoulder browning. However, it looks like the browning is starting to come in all over not just the shoulder. No pointy feathers (I think they are still too young for them) I should also add that I got them from a feed store. I know that they are suppose to be %90 accurate. However I got an EE from them in March and it turned out to be a cockerel. They told me it was a bad batch and they had a lot of boys in the mix. I could not get a straight answer if these birds are from the same hatchery.

Rooster is feathering slower than the others, but not by much anymore. Browning is starting to come in on the lower part of the body not just the wings. Comb is still small and yellow.

Gidget, pullet no question there.

No name has been yet to be named. I told my husband to name this one but he hasn't come up with anything yet. You can see the dark brown on the wing but is in the same pattern on both sides. Preening time after being picked up. You can see how the dark brown goes all the way down the back to the tail.

This one is only 6 weeks and first time posted. Owlowiscious number 2, first one was a cockerel. Thinking pullet.

So those are my 4 EEs. Any guesses on gender? I am kinda leaning pullet for all of them but only time will tell for certain. Will post again when they are a few weeks older. Thanks for reading!
