JJ, at what age do you pinion and what do you use. Do you have to cauterize?

I pinioned at 3 weeks. I had their cage clean and ready, and I had them in a box and quickly took out the quail one by one, hubby snipped with meat shears, and I put them in the clean cage. Which quickly became bloody. But they quit bleeding fairly soon and I kept the light on them to keep them from going into shock. I lost the smallest one. I didn't even look at them, I think they had enough of me. I was able to clean them out the following week. I didn't even bother pinioning the whites because they were so skittish I thought it would kill them, they'd bleed out too fast. plus there is only 6 of them and if they don't get to size I'll eat them. this next batch i will pinion after next week.

The kids did a great job taking care of my quails, I had to spend the night in the hospital! My appendix decided to get swollen and I went in thinking I was dying. They got me fixed up I was lucky it wasn't ruptured..

I do mine at 3-4 wks of age as this seems to be easiest for everyone involved... the birds are old enough to heal quickly and readily tolerate the small amount of blood loss thats involved, their size is big enough that you can tell the proper landmarks and easily handle them to perform the proceedure, yet they are young enough that its easy to do. i use a sharp pair of kitchen shears--- have a clean brooder ready to go--- snatch a victim, since i always pinion the right wing i get the bird in my left hand and out stretch the right wing and hold it that way between my thumb and index finger--- find my landmarks and "SNIP!" done! put him in the clean brooder and yell "NEXT!"

If you are overly concerned about bleeding and blood loss you can use sulfur powder or corn starch on the amputation site, but keep in mind the more you fool with them the more they will bleed.... best thing is snip and set them in the box and dont fool with them for 3-4 days other than feeding and watering... at this age they may be going without the heat light, but it doesnt hurt to turn it back on for a day or 3...

Cauterizing any small bird's amputated wing tip is kinda like using a chansaw for plastic surgery.... Its usually doesnt work out well.

I just got 13 button quail eggs...tried doing a search on what the humidity should be and for some reason...BYC search isn't working....can anyone please help?

Really? I always thought they said "bobwhite".. but then again I've not heard one of those fluffballs out there say "corturnix" either..
Today I should get JJ's eggs from the post office. I am not taking the pain killers, they make me sick as a dog, so I should be able to drive up the hill to go get them..
