slug mystery - how do they get in my kitchen

OK, this is ridiculous, but about a month or so ago, I came in from locking up the birds and screamed when I saw a slug on the counter, the edge of my kitchen sink.
I searched for a slime Trail to see which way it got in and can’t find any slime Trail. This is now happened about once or twice a week since then the slug is always in the approximately same place and always at the approximately same time. ( around last light time) how the h are they getting in if there is no slime Trail? My 84-year-old mother used to be a practical joker in her younger years . now I wonder if she is coming in and putting them there? I have not asked her because if it’s not her, I don’t really want to tell her that I’m finding slugs in the kitchen (since I cook for her.)
and Whenever I bring in something from the bird areas such as a bucket or feeding bowl, I check it carefully before I bring it in, no slugs.
so i asked Google and read this

Pour salt by your door and windows.

but how can they get through a screen? the windows have screens. and the doors are not left open. but ok if the slugs can open the doors then i better put a line of salt . i will do it.

i put the salt line all around the door. Husband was like what the heck is this. i also took everything out from under my sink and looked for spaces that a slug could fit through. I read that they can make them self as small as a number two pencil to squeeze through tight places well I did find some openings so I’m going to fill them with expanding foam.
i hate slugs.

oh and since they can open doors we are keeping all the doors locked. i sure hope they can’t pick locks too.

I occassionally find a single worm climbing up a random wall inside the house! Critters do strange things! All the best keeping them out!

Don't ducks eat slugs?

My MIL lived next to a home with horses that got out of the paddock one day. Terrified of horses, she kept both the screened door and the front door locked after that episode.
There were at least 8 steps up to that porch. And horses don’t have thumbs.

My old screen door had a gap up near the doorknocker; like that when I moved in. My cat Nutmeg used to climb the screen and use the door knocker when my father and nan visited lol.

ducks do but my ducks don’t live right up close to my house or i’d have no lawn left . The slugs that are trying to get in my house are probably running away from the ducks.
