SLW with titled head

You're welcome. When I cage chickens to separate them if they are broody or whatever, I fill up the red plastic Folgers coffee cans with water and feed. they are heavy enough to not get knocked over, and the red color attracts them.

Her weight went up an ounce: 1# 12.5oz, so that is good. She still has her head/neck twisted but keeps it fairly stable to eat when I feed her. She does eat out of the bowl I have in the tub and drinks out of the water, heavier bowls in place! So, seems to be making slight improvements, but not really sure if it will last.

I added turmeric to her supplement regimen, read it was a good thing to give them for this.

Tammy is getting worse. It's like her head/neck is having spasms. It's was harder for her to eat and drink today, she kept going in circles. I talked with a guy at the feed store that will humanely cull her for me. He raises meat birds so he has done it lots of times. Unless some miracle happens tonight, I think it is time. This is no life for Miss Tammy. Breaks my heart but I think it's the right thing to do.

I'm so sorry about Tammy, Julia. You have taken such good care of her. I hope she has a little miracle. Will you try to get a necropsy done on her to check for Mareks? California offers free ones to state residents at UC Davis, but I'm not sure what Nevada offers. UC Davis will do them for out of state people. Some states will also euthanize at the same time. Here is a link to state vets: http://www.usaha.org/Portals/6/StateAnimalHealthOfficials.pdf

I gave them a cal this morning and left a voice mail. I will call back after 9:00 and see what they can do. Thank you. I fed her this morning but she is still quite dizzy.

The state vet will be in Friday. They will euthanize and do a necropsy for a small fee ($30 =/-). The gal was very nice on the phone and explained the process to me and said they prefer to euthanize themselves because they want them as fresh as possible for necropsy. That is what we will do. I'll keep doing what I have been until then. If she has to go, I would at least like to know the cause.

I'm so glad that you now have a plan. That is a pretty reasonable price for a necropsy, and be sure to ask for Mareks testing. Some state charge nothing while other states have a really high price for necropsy. It will be nice to know that she won't suffer any more. I hope you can get through the next 2 days without feeling to bad about all of this. Please give us an update on how she is doing, and later, any necropsy results. Take care.

RIP Tammy chicken. Today I took Tammy to the NV Dept of Agriculture to be euthanized and to get the necropsy ($30). He called back after the gross exam to say her tumor was a solid mass that it had dead cells in the center. No other tumors that he could see present (he said it doesn't mean that there are not microscopic ones). No ear infection. He took samples of all tissues (including brain) and is sending that off to the biology lab for microscopic exam and will let me know early next week what those findings are. Depending on what that is, there is one more step to take but that will be an extra $70.00 or so, so he said to wait and see what comes back next week to see if it's anything conclusive.

I feel so bad for her but it seemed like time. She was spinning and her head was only upright to eat what I fed her. Not a good life.

My other three seem to be just fine. The other Wyandotte, MaryAnn, appeared to lay her first egg last Thursday, but nothing since. I say "appear" because it is a different shade of brown from Ginger's and we assume it came from her. It is a pinkish brown with speckles. Ginger has always been your standard brown egg and continues to be. Plus this egg was layed later in the day and the other two always lay by 9:00am.

I'm sorry for your loss of Tammy, but also relieved that she isn't suffering anymore. We learn a lot on this forum when people like you post necropsy results, so that we can follow the progression of an illness beginning to end. Since most of us are amateurs, it can help others reading this thread later. On a happier note, I'm glad you are getting new eggs, especially speckled ones--I love those. Take care.
