Small Chick ate a balloon

Smell? I think not. Tho the natural smell is there but there is nothing like foul or sour in it. Yes i have coconut oil and due to winters its solid but how do i make it eat?

No sour smell is good. You can break off small piece of coconut oil and see if they will eat it on their own. If not, you can usually force open their beak and put a small piece in their mouth (NOT down their throat), and they will naturally try to swallow.

Mix it in with its food. If you don’t have chick grit, get some dirt from outside and put it in a dish for the chick.

Do you have wet cat food or wet dog food? See if the chick will eat anything besides it’s chick feed. If it hasn’t eaten for days that to me is a sign that the chick isn’t healthy and I doubt it’s from the balloon. You need to get the chick to eat something.

Is this chick by itself? Chickens are a flock bird and they do not do well by themselves.

No actually they were 5 and now 2 left. From 2 one is sick already. Wdym by giving it dirt? Soil? Or should i forcefully just put the oil in its mouth?

Don’t force anything into the chicks mouth.

Put dirt from outside into a bowl or plate... you said that you don’t have chick grit and getting dirt from outside will give it the grit that it needs to be able to digest stuff that it has been eating that it should not be eating

Sounds to me like the chick is actually sick and it’s not from the balloon if you have lost chicks previously it sounds like you have some type of issue with a disease or some thing

There may be small pieces of grit or pebbles in your soil. Grit can help the gizzard to grind up foods and other things other than chick feed.

Dude its just standing idle even in dirt its not eating. How do i make it eat?

This is how its doing. It just popped as you can see in the video. Any sort of help. Also to mention this chick was doing so fine yesterday before the balloon incident. Now after all the replies i doubt if its a balloon.

Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? (It can help us understand what kind of resources you have available with out having to ask.) Are feed stores available to you? The easiest way to get grit is to buy it from a feed store.

What do you normally feed the chicks? Do you feed them chick starter with a protein range around 18-20%?

OP stated the chicken hadn't eaten since eating the balloon piece around 5-6 pm last night. I don't believe they've indicated it hasn't eaten for longer than that.



A chicken with an impacted crop usually has a FULL crop that hasn't emptied, because a chicken's desire is to eat until it's crop is full! It doesn't know it has an impacted crop and won't naturally stop eating. This doesn't meant there isn't a problem elsewhere in the chicken's system.

In my experience, just throwing in dirt for some chicks, they won't eat it right away, or sometimes at all. It isn't until I start giving them access to the chicken run outside that they start to explore more.

I'm not sure exactly what is wrong with your chicken, but I feel we can rule out a crop issue. The bird is still pooping, but since the obstruction was recent this could be just the bowels emptying out. Within the next 12 hours, if pooping stops this would indicate for sure that there is an obstruction. I still believe putting oil in its beak is the way to go. To others who have said not to force feed it, I've given dozens of rounds of syringe-fed medicines to my flock and never once had a bird aspirate and I can assure you that simply putting the medicine in front of the bird and hoping for the best will not get the bird to eat it.

The above article still suggest feeding the bird oil. It also suggests feeding a mixture of water and Epson salts, which is a mild laxative. I personally would start with the oil because oil will have no side affects whatsoever on your bird and if the bird stops pooping, start with the Epson salt treatment. I wouldn't start with Epson salts yet because if the bird isn't suffering from an obstruction you'll only dehydrate it.

Chicks usually like scrambled eggs, and they don't need chick grit to eat scrambled eggs. Fix it a scramble egg to see if that will entice its appetite.

You can’t force the chick to eat, you can end up injuring it. Try scrambling some egg and offer that, or try wetting her chick feed and see if it will eat that. Keep the dirt in a small dish and leave it available. Unfortunately if the chick won’t eat on its own, it’s not thriving and probably best to let nature take its course. I did have a chick that was only a few days old when she ate some bits of hard plastic; she was fine and lived to adulthood. Good luck, I hope your chick will be ok!

I just put a little piece of coco oil and it swallowed it naturally. Hope it recovers. Btw how much do i feed?
