My chickens also love the earthworms that Wal-Mart sells for fishing.

They sell huge bags of dried mealworms at my TSC, but they usually sell live ones at the pet store, but they are too expensive for the amount you get, and there are probably not enough in there to last you more than one feeding. You could always start a culture of your own tho. Mine get dried mealworms and they go absolutely crazy for them.

Really?! I don't think any of the pet stores will be open today but I will certainly check into it! Thank you!

Try using a long stick or broom handle to guide the 2 birds into the run with the others.

Yup the ones that they label “night crawlers”. There are no stupid questions when it comes to chicken keeping, except for “Do cockerels/roosters lay eggs?” Is my biggest chicken pet peeve.

I'm so so sorry! But I tried the hanger thing and caught 2 hens like that.. I know it seems mean but I didn't know what else to do.

I'm so glad ya'll understand. Bc after killing 7 unborn chicks yesterday on accident, losing Pebbles and Red and then having to catch them with the hanger, I was feeling pretty disturbed with myself.

Most folks who get birds have a while to read and study up before they get them, you obviously didn't have the option so you are trying to learn as you go....so cut yourself some slack on the process. You have come to the right place to do research and get help, it won't happen overnight, but you will become more comfortable as you gain experience.
You can also use empty feed bags for wind breaks, since you are in the deep South you only need the extra protection part of the year, the rest of the year you need extra ventilation to avoid high humidity. A couple of feed bags tied to your door should last 2 or 3 months, by then you will have a couple more available to replace them as needed.

I would suspend a 2x4 laid flat on its side at about 2 to 3 ft high across the back corner furthest away from the door to provide them a roost. A 2x4 across the corner on top of the frame will give you a good beam to hang food and water from if needed, also.
