Small Flock Thread Anybody?

For those of us who are limited to a number of chickens because of their location, or really any reason, I think it'd be fun to have a thread about them... You know, where we know each and every chicken individually and consider them pets, etc. Maybe we can get to know each other's. I don't have any recent pictures but I'll get some tomorrow.

I have a small flock only because if I get anymore eggs I'm gonna go insane. Since I have 8 hens and two ducks and I can only eat so many eggs.

I have 6 chickens that came to us in the weirdest way.

In March of this year my brother-in-law found two baby chicks hiding in the bushes in the front yard one night. He decided to keep them because my nieces fell in love with them, and also because we'd often find dead chicks outside. There was a flock that belonged to a neighbor who'd let them free in the street, so we kept those two chicks instead of releasing them back to the street flock.

A week or two later a tiny chick got into our backyard. I was home and heard it, poor thing was dirty and smelly, and had some blood on its beak. Thus two chicks became three. So far they are mystery breed chickens.

A couple of months later our chicks turned into pullets, so we have Megatron, Godzilla, and Rusty. My BiL wanted to get a rooster for the pullets, and I knew a lady from another forum got a bit too many cockerels in this year's hatching, so we adopted one, a light brahma named Roostroyer.

A couple of months later, we see a cute barred plymouth rock hen at the feed store so we took her home, she became Spaghetti aka grumpy lady.

Remember the neighbor with the street flock? He moved away and is selling his house, and took most of his chickens with him. Four hens were left behind, and two weeks ago one of them fell into our live trap. She because Dust, and my BiL has been trying to catch the other three hens that are still roaming outside. funny how we don't look for pets, they come to us XD.

I'm in. I just have three. Started w/ four but one turned out to be a roo. I really have my heart set on four but adding one chick could be dicey. I was going to wait until my BO went broody and then get her another BO chick to raise. I'd love to hear from others who have small flocks who have added just one chick. Am I crazy? Do I really need to add them in pairs?

I have a small hen house and I'm not sure that it can support 5.

Hi! I'm fairly new and have four (hopefully) pullets, seven weeks old. One Barred Rock, Zelda, one Australorp, Ruth, one Buff Orpington, Maybelle, and a NEw Hampshire, Pearl. I like having a small flock because I can get to know each one individually.

Chido- What a sweet story! I love those "I accidently got chickens" stories, lol.

TheSpiceGirls- I started with three, too... I've had over 25 at one time now! Be careful what you wish for!

new2chickens2011- Cute! Would love some pics! Did you get them sexed? You might be able to tell the sex on some of those breeds by seven weeks, you should post a few pics so we can see!

I think I'll be starting over with my flock. I'm re-doing the coop and run and having six chickens. I hope it will work out. I'm so tired of all of the complications.

everybody in my neighborhood just happens to have chickens, i found a beaten up chick in the alley behind my house looks like an attack, it died shortly, my rooster brought home a oriental hen from the alley, my neighbors gave a rooster to us, my uncle got a free rooster from his coworker, a rooster flew into our yard but we let him go because he started biting, i buy chicks from feed stores, i get chickens at flea markets and from cousins, having neighbors with chicken is not always a good idea because we can confuse our chickens and have frustration which also happened to me and it was embarrassing
