Small Order TLC package - Pet chicken.

Quote:
I am pretty sure they have more breeds in the spring. Keep checking back, I just did and they had added about 10 more breeds so I am sure they will have most of them in the spring

Actually, I should say that I completely agree that you should support local breeders or rescue (even better) But in the Bay Area it is sooo hard to find local breeders that have sexed chicks. We ended up with a rooster with our first chicks and it was hell trying to find a home. Luckily my dad has a friend that has lots of property and wanted a rooster. So this time I had to order chicks from My Pet Chicken because I cannot risk getting males. I know there still is a chance, but a low one.

Hi,
Sorry bout my opinion.
I still think its a nickle and dime thing adding a $25 charge to your order for not ordering more than 14+ chicks. Its a nitch I guess but they might as well say you can but only one chick for $25 rather than make it sould like you are getting a "deal" when you actually are not.

I'd rather someone tell me the chicks are $20 a piece rather than $2.50 and get a $40 bill, LMAO!
We use heat packs in the wonter to keep hands warm etc when out working in it. Haven't seen any for $25 but I beat its one h*ll of a heat pack.

Kind we use are a couple bucks for a pack of 2 or 4.

Again, just my opinion, I like it when you call it what it is. not try to coat it, or make it seem like it is something it just simply isn't. With the ecomony like it is I see things like this and its no wonder it is like it is.

I'd say if an add was put into a paper you'd be very surprised at how many people answered an add for chicks for sale @ $2-$3 a piece.
Its just me, I like it straight.
Thanks all,
Angela

i certainly understand your opinion. It is more economical to purchase locally. i used them as i wanted specific breeds i couldn't find at my feed store, and i also wanted all girls. The $25 isn't a surcharge, it's for the heat pack they put in with less chicks, to keep them warm on their journey.

This reminds me, i have a 3 chick credit with them from last year. i just wish they could get some of the true Araucana chicks. i would love a blue egg-layer, or two, or fourteen.

Being a newbie to owning chickens I did look into ordering from MPC but as I read more I did a search for individuals in my area here on BYC. I posted a message and found someone right around the corner from me. I now have 6 frizzle cochins. I dont have the room for a large amount of chickens and my DH would have said no to the whole thing if I even brought up 25+ so ordering from a hatchery was impossible for me. I think MPC fills that little nich but I also know that BYC members are always willing to help out and my lot only cost me 25$. Since I'm not suppose to have roosters the individual that sold them to me said if any were roosters she would gladly exchange them for me. (her name is Roosty by the way). MPC is great but I think if you have the ability to go through someone local or on BYC you'll be better off.

I am not a fan of MPC.. even though my order was canceled they still sent it, the TLC package ended up being useless because the heat pack was ripped open and spilled out everywhere in the box, and my chicks, though supposed to be all female, were not sexed properly and I ended up with a rooster

Horsechick, don't be sorry about your opinion.
It is costly, but in my case, there was no way I could order 25 chicks. I live in a town that does not allow chickens whatsoever. I had a rooster for 8 years. It was tough to keep him incognito at times. I'm lucky I have cool neighbors.
After my little Roaster's untimely death, I really missed not having a chicken around. I have 5 hens now, and anxiously wait for the move to our farm where I don't need to worry about having my comical lil loves. And will have lots more!
The chicks I ordered arrived safe and healthy.

Here's my MPC story...My DH and I are new to the chicken world and we did not want a large amount either. So we opted to go through MPC cause they had a 90% accuracy rate for sexing birds and we only wanted hens and blah blah blah...We bought 6 - paid $7 extra per bird for the sexing and ended up with 4 roosters. We only stumbled upon BYC this past week and are sooo happy we did. I wish we found this before but it's all good now.

The people at MPC are really nice and the birds we got though mostly male are absolutely stunning. They did refund us the $28 dollars for sexing BUT I would never order from them again. As you all know it is not the easiest thing to find homes for roosters no matter how beautiful. We are gonna try to keep 2 of them.

Someone from BYC actually forwarded a Craig's List list to us and we are headed upstate NY to pick up 6 new pullets from that listing. AND he will take one of my roosters. How awesome is that?

If you want to order a small order, Ideal Hatchery is very economical. They just have a $25 minimum order, but that can be chickens, feed, whatever. If recently ordered 10 chicks

4 Ameracuna Pullets
3 Barrded Rock Pullets
3 Red Sex-Link Pullets
1 pack of Gro-Gel

Total order with shipping to Alabama from Texas was just over $30

I even got 4 freebees thrown in for warmth, I think they charge $7.00 if you order less than a quarter box
