As long as there is moist poop, it will stink. I keep my chicks in the garage, they are 6 weeks and if I keep the litter fairly deep about 3 inches. Once they are about 3 weeks I toss a little food into the litter to encourage scratching, which turns the litter. Remember, if they were w/ mama she would teach them to scratch in the dirt/poop for food and bugs. Anyway, the only time it is really smelly is if one of them makes fresh poop when I am working on their food. My chicks are also in a 4x6' wood and wire pen that will become the run when attached to the elevated coop. They have plenty of room to run in and since it is wire the poop dries quickly.
