That happens to me A LOT too. I have to go in and actually type in a comment and THEN post the smiley. I don't TYPE in the smiley, I just click the picture of it and when it gets summited it changes on it's own. Once I tried summiting it 8 times until I finally got so frustrated I just put in a comment instead. It happens once every 50 posts or so for me.
I just tried this in Google Chrome and it happened to me. It is related to "ALL CAP" posts. We do have a setting that prohibits all cap posts, but I've never seen it in action. That may be what is happening here. It is really odd that it isn't happening to me in Firefox. Very very odd!
I noticed that putting regular text in the post somewhere before or after the smilies stops the system from automatically making it lower case.
I have no idea why it happens in some browsers and not others. Usually if it was a forum software issue it would happen cross all browsers and I've never had it happen in Firefox. Maybe FF has a way of passing the characters through even if all caps?
We could allow "all caps" posts, but those really do get quite annoying.
