Beautiful Pacific NW Oregon
We are new to the group and look forward to meeting many of you and learning as much as we can. We got 5 Laying Hens a couple weeks ago from some friends who were moving to Hawaii ( I know Lucky them). We have never raised chickens before so any help we can get would be really appreciated. So far our girls are laying about an egg a piece each day. We brought the Coop they had at there old house so they are familiar with it, we fenced off an area around the Coop so they can roam and scratch. Their previous owners were using just wood pet shavings so we have continued with that but I would Love to hear what some of you are using and an easy way to clean the Coop. Also, what is everyone feeding their hens, what foods do they like and dislike? We are really enjoying the fresh eggs we are getting, especially me since I can't eat store bought eggs without feeling nausaus all day. It's so nice to be able to enjoy eggs again

Hi and :welcome

Not sure about bedding, we have a dirt floor coop that we throw grass clippings into to make it smell nice - usually there is not much cleaning going on.

I found a couple of threads you could check out though.

We feed our hens layer mix and lots of kitchen scraps. They are a bunch of greedy guts. :p
When it gets warm they eat watermelon and yoghurt. Cooked egg and biscuits are always popular.
And if you can free range, you should think about that (even letting them out for a bit every day/week/whenever) to eat bugs and grass.

The eggs are indeed very good!

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D
